Q&A - TIGERNUTS (TERRA FIRMA FOODS)

When I saw a press release for Tigernuts grace my inbox I was immediately intrigued. Any sort of health food I am all about learning more about so I decided to contact the owner and get some questions answered so that I could better understand for myself then share the knowledge with you all!

In this Q&A we are interviewing the founders Elizabeth and Penny Sattle. We talk about Tigernuts the brand and the food as well as health in general.

Where did the inspiration for Tigernuts come from?
Biz actually came across Tigernuts during one of her work trips to the US (she owns a marketing and communications business also and does a lot of work in international markets).. We have both been passionate about health for a very long time and decided that Tigernuts needed to be bought to Australia and it would be a really great project for us to work on together.

Can you explain a little bit about to origin of Tigernuts and what exactly they are?
Tigernuts are actually not nuts, but tiny tubers (root vegetables). Tigernuts were originally cultivated in Northern Africa, and are one of the world’s oldest sources of nutrition. A recent study by Oxford University actually indicates that Tigernuts made up around 80% of Nutcracker Man’s diet between 2.4 and 1.4 million years ago ! Tigernuts have long been used as a food source, and in traditional medicine for early civilizations including the Chinese and Persians. They were one of the earliest domesticated crops, and have even been found in the tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs. The Persians were so fond of Tigernuts that during the Middle Ages, after their expansion across the north of Africa, they introduced the root vegetable to Europe and the Mediterranean.

What is it that makes Tigernuts such a nutritious thing to eat, even considered a superfood?
There are so many things! They are gluten, dairy and nut free. They are also Paleo and Auto Immune friendly. The small tubers are very high in fibre and the #1 natural source of resistant starch. Resistant starch is a prebiotic starch that acts much like insoluble fibre. Resistant starch is not digested in the stomach or small intestine; instead it is passed through to the colon where it acts as food for our bodies friendly gut bacteria (probiotics). Furthermore, Tigernuts contain digestive enzymes like catalase, lipase and amylase. The enzymes combines with Tigernuts’ resistant starch and fibre content aids digestive health, improves insulin sensitivity, lowers blood sugar levels and helps to counteract issues of the bowels. Tigernuts are high in good fats, primarily oleic acid – the good fat found in olive oil and avocado. In fact, the composition of Tigernut Oil is almost identical in composition to olive oil. Tigernuts are also rich in vitamins and minerals including phosphorous, potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper, manganese, iron and vitamins E and C.
It’s obvious with Tigernuts that health is a priority, what are the main reasons you would urge someone to consider healthier snacks such as this?
Tigernuts are great because they have a natural sweetness so they can help you curb that sugar craving without ruining the diet! The high fibre and resistant starch content of Tigernuts also means that they keep you fuller for longer. Tigernuts are quite chewy, which means you have to chew them (obviously) but it also makes them harder to overeat. They are also a great nut-free alternative to nut flours that tend to be provided as gluten free alternatives.

Tigernuts has seen much success, what do you see happening next? Are there any upcoming projects or plans to expand in different directions?
Well we have only been launched a few weeks, but the feedback so far has been amazing. We do have some other products that we are working on at the moment, but that’s top secret info so if I tell you I would have to kill you….(joking!) we will definitely keep you posted though :)

A huge thank you to Terra Firma Foods and Tigernuts for being part of this healthy discussion.

HARVEST BOX Q&A - HEALTHY SNACKING

You may remember that in a few posts back I introduced you to Harvest Box, the guilt-free snacking company that delivers treats straight to your home or office. Last time, I posted an unboxing and review of one of their boxes so you can read that HERE if you're interested. This time I'm bringing to you a Q&A from my mini interview with Harvest Box. Read on to find out more about the beginnings of this box, breaking down the myth that snacking is bad for you and looking into the future of Harvest Box.

Where did the inspiration for Harvest Box come from?
Founders, James Scott, George Stooke and William Cook started Harvest Box because, having grown frustrated with the lack of healthy snack options in the workplace themselves, they guessed others must feel the same!
They were keen to create a business they could be proud of – a business that contributes to healthier eating choices for people at work or home. Harvest Box aims to eliminate calorie and sugar-laden quick fixes by bringing healthy snacks to you, so making the right choice becomes super convenient!
Our tagline is ‘Say Hello to Guilt-Free Snacking’ and we love making it easy for people to do just that.

How does Harvest Box work and what is your favourite aspect of it?
The process is simple – choose a delivery day, tell us what you do (and don’t!) like, and we’ll send you a box of healthy treats each week, hand-picked to suit your tastes. We think the best aspects of the service are the element of surprise, because you don’t know what you’ll get each week, and the convenience factor. It’s all too easy to resort to chips and chocolate when that 3pm slump kicks in, but if there’s a Harvest Box on your desk, there’s no need!

What kind of snacks can we expect to receive in a Harvest Box?
We’re proud to say that our range of dried fruit, nuts, seeds, crackers and treats is the biggest it’s ever been – there are 60 mixes in total. Some of our customers’ current faves are: Strawberry Milkshake (strawberries, cranberries, blueberries and yoghurt balls), We Love Nuts (roasted almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews and peanuts) and Super Mix (a trail mix featuring Queensland-grown pineapple and white chocolate).

Harvest Box seems to break down the myth that snacking is bad for you, what is your philosophy on this?Absolutely! Snacking gets a bad rap because it’s been so difficult to make good choices until recently. Choosing nuts, dried fruit and seeds over chips and chocolate takes away the guilt element and means that you can actually celebrate and enjoy a little treat in between meals. Our portion-controlled snacks keep you fuller for longer and are bursting with healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and a heap of other stuff that makes your body happy. And, if your body’s happy, energetic and not craving for anything, you’re far less likely to overindulge on the stuff that’s not so good for you.

Are there any upcoming projects or plans happening with Harvest Box?Yes, it’s an exciting time for us as we’ve just launched a range of our products in Coles Australia-wide! Rather than replacing our Harvest Box service, which is going from strength to strength, we see Snack Packs as a natural extension. They’re perfect for people who want to grab something on the go and we’ve actually designed them in response to feedback from our weekly box customers, who have told us they’d love to see our products in supermarkets and convenience stores. We’re delighted with the response the Snack Packs have had so far and we’re really glad to be making guilt-free snacking easier than ever before. Find out more here: http://www.harvestbox.com.au/HB/
That concludes my interview with Harvest Box, I hope that you enjoyed learning a bit more about the company on a more personal level. Don't forget to go check out the unboxing and review if you haven't already.

Q&A: WHICH IS WORSE? CALORIES, FATS OR CARBS?

So ever since "Jordy's Fitness 7 Day Guide" was released, I have been receiving a lot of emails asking questions about everything health and fitness related so I have decided to start a "Q&A" series. This first question is all about which is worse; calories, fats or carbs? Which of the three should I stay away from most? It's a tricky and complicated topic but I have tried to make the answer quite simple.
