SUPER FOOD: CACAO

We often hear about these "super foods" which apparently contain properties which are the key to success in a healthy eating plan. This time I will be talking about Cacao! What it is, it's benefits, what it tastes like, how you eat it and if it's worth it.

What is Cacao?
One of the most nutrient rich and complex foods first loved by the ancient Mayans and Aztecs for it's amazing healing properties. Cacao is the highest whole food source of magnesium and out of all the whole foods that contain antioxidants, raw chocolate is the highest in the world! Cacao is different to regular chocolate though because it's benefits and nutrients are preserved due to not being heated.

What are the benefits?
* Raises endorphins and promotes a healthy exchange of neurotransmitters.
* Keeps hormones balanced.
* Due to it's high levels in Magnesium, Cacao helps regulate your metabolism.
* Increases brain power, helps energize muscles and builds strong bones.
* Extremely high in anti-oxidants which help fight off free radicals and infections.
* Also contains a lot of minerals such as iron which is critical in nutrition.
* Amazing for your skin as it contains sulfur, a mineral that builds strong nails, hair and promotes beautiful skin as it helps to detoxify the liver.

What does it taste like? How do you eat it?
It tastes like dark chocolate intensified 20 times and with added bitterness. It isn't that great on it's own; I mean it kind of tastes like chocolate so I'm not complaining but it gives you a much nicer chocolatey flavour when used in combination with something. I love to add it to my protein smoothies, baked goods, granola, yoghurt and pretty much anything else I can add it to and get away with.

Is it worth it?
They can get quite pricy costing $10 for a 100g bag but you really only use small amounts at a time so I would say it's a worthwhile investment.

So what are you waiting for?
Get in the kitchen and try out this guilt free treat!
